About DGfE (GERA)

The German Educational Research Association (GERA) is an association for educational researchers active in teaching and research. The association was founded in 1964 and currently has around 3,000 members. GERA aims to promote study, research and education in the area of educational theory and science. Its wide-ranging work is mainly carried out through GERA’s 13 divisions and 19 subdivisions and manifests itself in publications, meetings and a joint congress, which takes place every two years.
GERA operates the institution databank (Institutionendatenbank) in cooperation with the German Education Server (Deutscher Bildungsserver). The databank includes detailed information on institutes of education in Germany.

Educational policy initiatives

GERA takes positions on questions of educational policy from an expert standpoint. The association has submitted opinions on the following topics over the past few years:

  • Academic freedom
  • Academic and professional principles (Code of Ethics)
  • Amendment of the third-level education framework law
  • Improvement of curricular standards for educational research
  • Problems with and consequences of unemployment among educators
  • The situation regarding emerging researchers
  • Standards in educational research
  • The continuing development of educational research degree courses and study programmes
  • Structural issues in the development of the education system 
  • Development of educational research in the new federal states

The General Assembly takes place every two years at the GERA Congress. The academic divisions and subdivisions present their specialised discipline, with their work gaining financial support through membership contributions.
